Texas Fit Chick Tinas' success!

I started Texas Fit Chicks at the Crosspoint Church location in McKinney, TX, about four months ago with trainer, LeighAnne Maloy.  Going into the boot camp, I had previously tried losing 20-30 pounds on my own with little to no success.  I would lose a few pounds here and there, but nothing stuck, with my workout routine or dieting efforts. From the first workout with LeighAnne, I began to see that I wasn’t challenging myself enough and had no idea what I was doing on my own.

I love the variety and intervals she shows us during each workout.  It is NEVER boring and always engages different muscle groups.  I always leave her class feeling accomplished, successful and full of energy.  Four months in, and I can honestly say that I’m hooked!  My eating habits have changed; I now look at labels and ask questions when dining out.  My energy level with my child has increased and I’m more productive in my personal and professional life.  I am so glad I discovered Texas Fit Chicks and would highly recommend it to anyone looking to make life long changes to their personal health!

Texas Fit Chicks Boot Camps' 45 Snacks under 100 Calories!

We love this list of 100 snacks that are under 100 calories! Snacking can sometimes un-do progress you've made during Boot Camp and we found these snacks perfect to stay on track!

Remember to always double check the labels of your chosen foods for calories and to always keep to moderation.

20 Olives

68 calories – If you like something to nibble with your treat glass of wine, why not steer away from the crisps and have some olives instead? At only 68 calories for 20 they’re a far healthier option. Olives are a great low calorie option that are also good for the liver.

14 Almonds

98 calories – A perfect snack for keeping at your desk when you need something to snack on, almonds is an ideal substitute for the savoury snacks people usually reach for and with heart protective monounsaturated fats (MUFA’s) and some vitamin b why wouldn’t you?

An apple

100 calories – “An apple a day can keep the doctor away.” Apples are rich in soluble fibre which helps protect against environmental pollutants and eliminates cholesterol. Go for one of the sweeter variety and you can skip a less healthy sugary snack.

1 ‘Skinny Cow’ Ice Cream

100 calories – You can still enjoy a frozen treat and keep your ‘beach body’ thanks to these low fat iced desserts, and they come in a variety of tasty flavours, like berry and chocolate.

Miso soup

57 calories – You can buy miso soup in powder sachets so they make a quick and easy mid-afternoon snack for the office.

One ‘party size’ sausage roll

61 calories – pastry is no friend to a dieter, but luckily just one bite sized sausage roll won’t eat much into your calorie allowance.

10 salted peanuts

74 calories – Nuts are high in calories, but as a ‘Low GI’ food they release their energy slowly, so a small amount will keep hunger pangs at bay for a long time.

Three celery sticks stuffed with cottage cheese

75 calories – Celery may seem like boring diet food, but filled with soft cottage cheese it makes a great savoury treat.

Five ‘Werthers Originals’

100 calories – How long does it take to suck your way through five boiled sweets? It’ll be dinner time before you know it!.

‘Weight Watchers’ Frozen Chocolate Eclair

76 calories – Chocolate, pastry and cream at just 76 calories? It’s true!

Three potato wedges with ketchup

100 calories – It’s almost as good as being allowed chips. Just make sure you don’t put more than three in the oven and don’t overdo the ketchup…

30 grapes

100 calories – Last’s all morning and counts as one of your 5 a day. Grapes help in the treatment of anaemia, fatigue, arthiritis, gout, rheumatism and especially for recovery from illness.

Fun-size Milky Way

76 calories – “The red car and the blue car had a race… All red used to do was stuff it’s face; it ate everything it see’s from trucks to prickly tree’s… but good old blue he took the milky way!”

One melon

88 calories – Melons are the ultimate diet snack! They have such a low calorific value as they are made up mostly of water; go ahead and eat a whole one if you like!

Six dried apricots

100 calories – Convenient snack to have in your handbag, plus they’re full of fibre too.

Tomato soup

74 calories – a low calorie soup can be a filling snack and full of goodness.

25 cherries

100 calories – Full of vitamins and low fat, cherries also take a while to eat as you have to avoid the stones, so your morning snack lasts.

‘Special K’ Chocolate Chip Cereal Bar

84 calories – Fewer calories than the standard chocolate bar; a great sweet fix and craving killer.

2 crackers lightly spread with smooth peanut butter

93 calories – nuts release energy slowly (thanks to their low glycaemic index), plus crackers always take ages to chew, just don’t try to eat them in under a minute.

2 Tuna nigri sushi

98 calories – A very healthy snack for sushi fans!

Portobello mushroom stuffed with roast veg and feta cheese

100 calories – Packed with healthy veg and tasty cheese.

Eight cashew nuts

100 calories – eaten in sensible quantities, nuts can be a dieter’s best friend, as they keep you fuller for longer.

One mini Toblerone

21 calories – I bet this one is a realy shocker! Yes, bite sized chocolate with crunchy nougat chunks can be a mere 21 calories each believe it or not. (note MINI toblerone).

A pear

100 calories – Next time you fancy a snack, why not reach for a refreshing pear? One of your 5-a-day and less than 100 calories too.

‘Weight Watchers’ Luxury Layer Chocolate Brownie Pot

90 calories – If you feel like a treat but don’t want to ruin your diet; one of these iced desserts is perfect (and it’s much less fattening than ice cream).

A medium corn on the cob with seasoning

2tsp hummus with a carrot

100 calories – Enjoy hummus with some crunchy carrot at any time for just 100 calories.

Four slices of mango

90 calories – You can enjoy four slices of juicy mango. They’re also sweet so great as a treat if you’d usually reach for something with more calories!

A cup of blueberries

83 calories – Blueberries (as well as being a strong antioxidant) are tasty, refreshing and a great way of getting one of your ‘five a day’. Also considered a ‘superfood’ for it’s ability to slow the aging process and protect against heart and circulatory disease and many forms of cancer.

A ‘Weight Watchers’ Mini Chocolate Stick

95 calories – There’s nothing better (and usually horrifically calorific!) than a tasty ice cream in the summer months, but if you don’t want to ruin your diet why not try one of these?

70g ‘TOTAL’ 2% yogurt with 80g strawberries

69 calories – Enjoy them with some creamy yogurt for only 69 calories. Strawberries also have the amazing ability to increase the body’s elimination of uric acid (a substance which irritates inflamed joints).

A bag of Slim Fast Cheddar Flavour Bites

95 calories – Cheesy snacks are notorious for being high in calories, but these cheddar-flavoured bites are only 95 calories a bag.

One Strawberry ‘Weight Watchers’ Mini Swirl Pot

92 calories – If you fancy a tasty snack in the evening, why not reach for one of these? They’re under 100 calories per pot and less calorific than a bowl of ice cream.

One Starbucks Tall Cappuccino with skimmed milk

76 calories – Coffees can be surprisingly high in calories, but if you’re dependant on your caffeine fix then why not opt for Starbucks ‘skinny cappuccino’? You can finally enjoy your hot drink without too much guilt!

10 Pringles

100 calories – At a party you can tuck into 10 Pringles without the guilt. However don’t be pulled into the addictive ‘once you pop you can’t stop’ slogan (pretty sure it’s not true).

A ‘Dole’ Pineapple Pot

62 calories – Pineapple is a great sweet and these pots are handy any time. Being both anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial; Sore-throats, digestive problems, bruising and blood clots all respond to Pineapple’s natural ingredients!

Why Soda (including diet) is making you Fat!

Follow Us

Why Soda Is Making You Fat!

If you’ve been drinking one or more sodas every day, that aluminum can in your hand is to blame for those extra digits on the scale. We’re not talking a couple pounds either. We’re talking long term weight gain. One can of cola adds more than 100 calories to your daily intake. That’s over 10 lbs of additional body fat every year.

Obesity, type-2 diabetes, and soda addiction have all risen together steadily and scarily over the past decades. Coincidence? Not a chance. Soda is sabotaging your body.

What’s so bad about a little bubbly liquid?
Lots and lots of calories and zero nutritional value. Sugary soft drinks account for almost 10% of the average American’s daily caloric intake. That’s a ton of empty calories that lack any of the nutrients, fiber, or minerals your body needs to function. Because soda’s missing what your body craves, no matter how much you drink you’ll still be left feeling hungry. So, on top of hundreds of empty calories, you pile on additional food that still counts against your ideal daily allotment. Remember, there is one absolute truth: if you take in more calories than you burn you will gain weight.

Your odds of becoming obese increase as much as 1.6 times for every 12 ounces of soda you drink over the course of the day. That’s because one small can of soda holds a whopping 140 calories of added sugar. Reality check: at most fast food restaurants, a 12 ounce serving of soda is considered the kiddie size.
Go directly to fat jail.
All these added sugars are simple sugars, meaning they are readily and easily absorbed. When you take in such a high volume so quickly your insulin spikes. Your body can’t handle the rapid influx, which leads to extra glucose being stored as fat. You don’t get any lasting energy from the liquid carbs; you get that familiar and inevitable crash. Instead of being ready to hit the gym to burn off any extra fat, you’re so exhausted you just hit the couch. Do not pass go. Do not collect $200.

I’ll just switch to diet soda!
Not so fast. Recent studies show that over time diet sodas still cause weight gain. If you drink 2 or more servings of diet soda a day you are 5 times more likely to increase dangerous visceral fat in your midsection. That extra fat puts you at greater risk for diabetes, heart disease, and other chronic illnesses.
Let’s say you only drink a single serving of diet soda a day. Diet soda is still high in sodium. The more sodium in your body, the more water you’ll retain. Which means if you’re trying to lose weight, diet soda can actually make it that much harder move the scale in the right direction. And let’s not forget the artificial sweeteners in diet soda – a BIG no-no!

Instead of sodas, why not reach for healthier and even more refreshing beverages?
If you won’t give up the carbonated bite of soda, mix two parts seltzer water with one part 100% fruit juice – like powerhouse pomegranate or cranberry. You’ll get your pleasant pop and fizz along with rich antioxidants and vitamins. Embrace homemade smoothies made with fresh fruit and almond milk or greek yogurt for added protein.
Maybe it’s time you jump on the green tea train. Even if you sweeten your tea, you’re more likely to check your sugar intake when you’re the one spooning in the sweetener. Or reach for that oldie but goodie, pure H2O.

One thing is for sure: cut out sodas and you’ll start to feel lighter than carbonated air.
Let us help you rid yourself of the nutrition which sabotages your health and help you make better choices you can trust.

Holidays are Coming...what's your plan to avoid weight gain? Texas fit Chicks Bootcamp trainers can help

I love the saying "Failing to Plan is PLanning to Fail." When it comes to the holidays and food temptations, this is critical to your success. Those of you that are already clients at Texas fIt Chicks, know that our trainers won't ever expect you to eat perfectly all of the time. We encourage you to have a "cheat" day or meal once a week, otherwise you will feel deprived and less likely to succeed. Over the next couple of months though, the holidays bring with it stress, change in routine, travel and lots of heavy and fattening food. That's why the average American will gain around 7lbs over the next 2 mos. I want you to set a goal today. Losing weight will be a challenge, but it can be done with planning and flexing that will-power muscle! Another goal could be to maintain and not GAIN. That will also take some flexing of your will-power muscle, and having a plan you stick with.

Decide ahead of the parties to plan for your treats. Decide in advance that you’re going to have one or two treats per event and then enjoy them. Educate yourself on what's in that latte that you are enjoying daily, and if it's enough to replace a meal, decide if you want that or pie after dinner? Choose which indulgences you want to have, and compensate later in the day or the next day with healthier choices. I do well when I have a plan. So if we are going to be gone for 5 days, I will plan to exercise 3 times and then pick and choose what I want to "spend" my calories on. When there's a plan and a goal ahead of time, it makes a huge difference in my behavior.

Eliminate food cues that cause impulse eating. This is called “stimulus control.” Don’t forget, if you don’t buy it, it won’t be there for you to eat. Use a hunger scale from 1-10. “1” is VERY hungry, “10” is VERY STUFFED, and “five” is CONTENT. When you feel the cookies call, ask yourself, where am I on the hunger scale? If you’re a “one,” “two,” or “three,” then you need to find a healthy meal or snack. If you’re a “six,” “seven” or “eight,” then you need to find something else to do other than eat.

Sometimes just pushing away from the table when you are full is the trick. Listening to your body and knowing when you are full is when it's time to stop. Don't eat just because everyone around you is ~ think of your goal often, but enjoy your treats when you do indulge! I have been one of those statistics and come back from being away for Christmas with an extra 5 lbs to lose. It's very frustrating and takes so much work to lose it!

If you want guidance of a female personal trainer through the holidays, but don't want to spend a ton on private training, check out our women's only bootcamp! We offer Indoor Bootcamp for MckInney, Frisco, Allen, Plano, Prosper and Dallas - with women trainers. Our boot camp will help you lose weight and tone up. We use things like Kettlebells, Resistance bands, BOSU trainers, Medicine Balls and Stability balls to get you in the best shape of your life. Why do Texas Fit Chicks strength train in bootcamp? Osteoperosis, fat loss and MORE!

Many times women are scared to lift weights. They don't want to look like bodybuilders or get buff! Please understand that if you lift correctly, and under the guidance of a trainer...that won't happen. Resistance training is critical to keeping your body healthy and our bootcamp design incorporates this in our training design.

Getting older is not fun...but you may know that already. Along with our metabolism slowing down each year after 35, muscle mass naturally diminishes with age. "If you don't do anything to replace the lean muscle you lose, you'll increase the percentage of fat in your body," says Edward Laskowski, M.D., a physical medicine and rehabilitation specialist at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn., and co-director of the Mayo Clinic Sports Medicine Center. "But strength training can help you preserve and enhance your muscle mass — at any age."

Strength training also helps you:
  • Develop strong bones. By stressing your bones, strength training increases bone density and reduces the risk of osteoporosis.
  • Control your weight. As you gain muscle, your body gains a bigger "engine" to burn calories more efficiently — which can result in weight loss. The more toned your muscles, the easier it is to control your weight.
  • Reduce your risk of injury. Building muscle helps protect your joints from injury. It also contributes to better balance, which can help you maintain independence as you age.
  • Boost your stamina. As you get stronger, you won't fatigue as easily.
Manage chronic conditions. Strength training can reduce the signs and symptoms of many chronic conditions, including arthritis, back pain, depression, diabetes, obesity and osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis is a condition in which bone mineral density is lost, usually affecting postmenopausal women. Estrogen is a vital element in bone health. After menopause, bone density is the most vulnerable, as estrogen production decreases. Simultaneously, muscle mass decreases with age at a rate of approximately 15 percent per decade, according to the American College of Sports Medicine. Keeping your bones strong starting at an early age will reduce your risk of brittle bones down the road.

Our bootcamp is guided by female personal trainers that specialize in training women only. You will have a well-rounded program designed with targeted training to transform your body for weight loss, toning and all around better health! Our clients enjoy weight loss of 8-10lbs after 3 days a week in our 5 wk sessions. We also provide a FREE 5 week nutrition plan to get results faster! Our camps will never try to sell you supplements, shakes, or anything else! We just want you to get the results you want...and have fun doing it!
